Hello, this is Tomoko. Today, I studied about "Name"at the Cross-Cultural Studies class.
I found out that naming way is different in each countries. So, I 'd like to know your name and the origin of your name.
As for me, my name is Takabayashi(last name) Tomoko(fiest name), in Chinese character, 高林(last) 朋子(first). 高林 means "wood at high place", and when I translate 朋子 straightly, it means "double moon child", but I don't know the real origin of my first name. My mother said it's the old Japanese actress's name....
Anyway, please tell me about your name and the origin.
Tomoko Takabayashi

Hi Tomoko! Nice to meet you! My name is Brianna (first name) Gardner (last name) and I am a 2nd year student at Michigan State University. I also find it interesting that different countries name people differently. My first name, Brianna, originates from Ireland and means noble, strong, and virtuous. My mother told me that my name first appeared in the book "The Faerie Queen" written by Sir Edmund Spenser. In the book, Brianna is the queen of the fairies. My last name, Gardner, is of English origin and means Gardener- the job. A long time ago, people were given last names by the job they did. For example, if you were a baker, your last name would be baker. If you were a fisherman, your last name would be Fisher. A lot of American names are like that. Hope you found that interesting!

Hi Tomoko,
In America, my name is Julia Greenwald. My last name Greenwald comes from my father's central European heritage. My first name has no meaning... my parents chose it because they liked the way it sounded. In Japan, I use my mother's original last name Takahashi and my first name Julia. In kanji, 高橋 and 樹梨亜.

Hello Tomoko! It's very interesting that you bring up the origin of our names, because for the most part a name can identify us as who we are.

My full name is Margaret Mary Ferrara. My nickname is "Maggie" for short. When I researched, 'Margaret' it came up meaning 'Pearl' or 'Mother of Pearl' Mary means 'Star of the Sea' or is also for Jesus's Mother's name. Ferrara is Italian origin and like Brianna said, it originates from the profession my ancestors had. Ferrara means Iron Worker or Blacksmith.

Hi, everyone!!
Thank you for answering my quection, about "name".
I really enjoyed reading your comments and, everyone has wonderful name!!
My name doesn't have such special meanings, so I'm little envy you.
I've heard that some American people's Family name came from their ancestor's job.
However, in Japan, there are few people have a name which relate job.
Most Japanese's names come from nature like mine( 高林=woods at high place).
It's really interesting to know the differents of each people's name, isn't it?
